
NEW CODE FOR OLD DISTRIBUTIONS
For those
of you who wish to stick with your old, familiar version of
Linux but also want some new software, there are a few options out there.
Aside from building source code for new applications from scratch, you can
download new RPM packages and rebuild them under your current
distribution--assuming you know something about building source and shell
scripts.

SSH EXPLOITS ON THE RISE
Earlier this year, Linux
users were alerted to a remote vulnerability in
the SSH daemon's crc32 compensation. Due to a problem with the crc32
routines, all versions of SSH and OpenSSH using SSH protocol 1 are
vulnerable to remote attackers gaining privileged access to your machine.
Known
for courting newbies, Mandrake Linux has done an about-face by
courting high-end users with the Dec. 3, 2001, release of its port of
Mandrake Linux 8.1 for the Intel IA64 (Itanium) architecture.
